FAQ:

Q. Why did FOP, Lodge 77 start a political action committee?

A. During recent efforts to achieve compensation parity with our public safety counterparts, it was observed that public safety advocacy groups with an active PAC were more effective in achieving pay and benefits goals long term. Additionally, Virginia is a,” Right to Work” state. Therefore, collective bargaining and binding arbitration are not tools available to labor organizations. A PAC is merely just another tool that will hopefully increase the voice of our membership.

Q. What is a Political Action Committee or PAC?

A. A political action committee is organized for the sole purpose of raising and spending money to support political candidates sympathetic to our concerns. The Fairfax Police PAC’s decisions will be made with regards to fair and balanced compensation for Fairfax County law enforcement officers.

Q. Will member’s dues be used to fund the PAC?

A. NO. The PAC will raise funds independent of membership dues. If general funds (non-member dues) were to be transferred from the FOP, Lodge 77 to the PAC, it would require a vote by the FOP membership per the PAC by-laws.

Q. How can I donate money to the PAC?

A. We are working on a secure donation portal on the FOP, Lodge 77 website. Until those options are in place, bank checks, along with the FORMS BELOW may be sent to the following address:  Fairfax Police PAC – 10513 Judicial Drive, Suite 102 – Fairfax, VA 22030 PAC

Q. Do I have to give personal information to donate?

A. YES. The State Board of Elections requires that we collect certain information. Please use the attached form when sending in donations of any amount. Donations exceeding $100 a year must be reported to the state with personal information. Important note: The information on the form must match the information on the bank check. If a P.O. Box is on a check, then that can be on the form and will be reported. For joint checking accounts, the name on the signature line must be the same person as listed on the form.

Q. Are my PAC contributions tax deductible?

A. NO. Political contributions are not deductible even if you are running for office and spending money on your own political race. You’ll find the official word from the IRS in IRS Publication 529 [Miscellaneous Deductions]: “You cannot deduct contributions made to a political candidate, a campaign committee, or a newsletter fund. Advertisements in convention bulletins and admissions to dinners or programs that benefit a political party or political candidate are not deductible.”

Q. Do I have to be an FOP member to donate to the PAC?

A. NO.
